The Wondrous Universe: Creation without Creator?

by
Gerhard Börner

The world as it is viewed from modern physics and cosmology has many strange and unexpected features. Often these are in stark contrast with our everyday experience or our preconceptions, such as the concept of space and time as finite and changeable. Nevertheless it is this strange world which is the fundamental basis of our existence. Therefore modern science also has a few things to say about the age-old questions: Who are we? – Where do we come from? – Where are we going? The author, an experienced scientist and teacher, presents the knowledge that we have about our world for non-experts. He takes us on a journey through cosmology and the quantum world of elementary particles. And he sketches the impact of the insights gained into philosophical assumptions and religious beliefs in these disciplines. In the end he asks the speculative question whether there is something beyond the limits of the natural sciences.

Pragmatic Perspectives on Language and Linguistics Volume II: Pragmatics of Semantically-Restricted Domains

  10/02/2012       fantezi      0 Comments

Pragmatics of Semantically-Restricted Domains, the second volume of Pragmatic Perspectives on Language and Linguistics, edited by Iwona Witczak-Plisiecka, gathers papers which partly complement and develop the first volume, Speech Actions in Theory and Applied Studies (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2010). Most of the texts collected in this book, representative of advanced independent research and that of an informed exercise in the application of a pragmatic framework, result from the Fourth Symposium on New Developments in Linguistic Pragmatics, organized at the University of ?od?, Poland, in May 2008. Accepting the inevitable failure of any attempt to pose a strict and clear-cut division between the research area of semantics and that of pragmatics, the volume focuses on pragmatics-oriented analyses of data which are best described as semantically limited. While Volume One concentrated on speech as a type of action, the present volume, without denying the inherently actional nature of language use, concentrates on limited contexts. Pragmatic phenomena in semantically-restricted domains are addressed from a variety of both theoretical and applied perspectives. The book is divided in three parts. Part One, Pragmatics, Politics and Ideology, gathers seven papers centered on issues pertaining to political linguistics. In Part Two, The Pragmatics of Humour, Power and the Media, there are eight papers which explore issues of politeness and modesty, pragmatic aspects of mediated and gendered discourse, or dynamicity of power relation in interaction. Part Three, Focus on Textual Properties, concentrates on text, excluding political discourse. It integrates discussions of equivalence and specialized translation, intertextual properties and pragmatically-motivated lexical choices in business communication, in law, and in science.

The Jewish Torah Is Not the Word of God

  10/02/2012       elpola21      0 Comments

The honor of attributing a literary work to God is an extremely powerful one. It is also extremely dangerous, because it instantaneously legitimizes every word contained in the literary work. For this reason, scripture believed to be inspired by God must be analyzed thoroughly to determine if it is worthy of such an honor. When I suggest that the Jewish Torah is not the words of God, I do not wish to offend Jews and Christians, only to defend God. I mean to say that in my view the Jewish Torah does not pass the tests of morality, of ethics, of scientific accuracy, of historical accuracy, or the test of congruity within itself, all attributes which would be expected of the words of God. To be clear, this book is not designed for ridicule, but for explanation and correction. I intend to present my case as to why the Jewish Torah is not the word of God and how the belief that it is the word of God has impacted the past and the present. And finally I intend to offer the corrections from the Quran to the errors contained in the Jewish Torah.

Literature and the Growth of British Nationalism: The Influence of Romantic Poetry and Bardic Criticism

  10/02/2012       panosng      0 Comments

This book explores how British Romantic poetry--the writing, reading, and critical reception of it--reinforced British nationalism in the 19th century, ripening the political processes of nationhood that began with the first Act of Union in 1707. Using archival research on literary collections, criticism and reviews, this study documents the rise of bardic criticism in the 18th century, a style of literary criticism that reinvented the vernacular poet as a national bard and established a national role for poetry. Within this context, this book offers a new reading of major works by Romantic poets from Wordsworth and Coleridge to Felicia Hemans and Anna Letitia Barbauld, illuminating the ways they corroborated the public image of poets as bona fide national bards and advanced British nationalism, even when they intentionally set out to oppose or reform the politics of state.

So Many Moving Parts

Tiffany Atkinsons third collection is an eccentric 21st-century meditation on the awkwardness of body and spirit and their unexpected, often unwanted intrusions into the business of everyday life. Lyrical and experimental by turns, these poems push familiar events - commuting, telephones, babysitting, foreign travel - to open out toward unanswerable questions and elemental connections with an unstable physical world. Bold, wishful, ambivalent, sometimes even grudgingly affectionate, the collection is a spiky celebration of the almost invisible revelations that exsist when you only look closely enough.

(Tales of the Crusaders #2)

1832.http://www.booksjadid.com/2013/08/pdf...
